Do Unto Others

It’s one of the first things that kids learn in preschool: “Now, don’t pull Jimmy’s hair. You wouldn’t like that if he did it to you, would you?” The Golden Rule is one of the simplest rules in the world, and at Erie Insurance, we think it’s pretty important.

A lot of companies have long, complicated mission statements talking about paradigms and synergy. Erie Insurance is a little different, though. When H.O. Hirt founded ERIE in 1925, he wanted a business that was based on “simple common sense, mixed with just plain decency.” That’s why our guiding principle is familiar: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

No need to complicate it or whitewash it: at ERIE, the Golden Rule is our guide. It’s easy to remember and even easier to apply. We’d all like to be treated with dignity, respect, honesty, and H.O. Hirt’s good old common sense.

After all, if kids in the sandbox can learn to treat each other well, why can’t your insurance company?

There She Is, Miss America

Erie Insurance agents have to be like Miss America. While there’s no eveningwear competition, we have to be just as well-rounded as any pageant contestant.  And there’s even a judging portion: all ERIE agents are “handpicked” to make sure they’re the kind of people who will uphold the motto of “ERIE is Above All in Service.”

It’s not enough that we can help you get the best deals on coverage (though we’re always looking out for you).

It’s not enough that we are knowledgeable about insurance (though we know our stuff).

No, ERIE agents have to be the kind of people who are never okay with “good enough.” We’re the kind of people who always go the extra mile, not because we have to, but because it’s the right thing to do. The kind of people who take the time to listen, to care, and to give all that we have.

That’s the value of an ERIE agent. Does your agent hold service above all?

Getting Serious About Life Insurance

Parent And Child

No one likes to think about life insurance, much less talk about it or buy it. It’s uncomfortable and a little scary, acknowledging that we won’t live forever. But remember: life insurance isn’t about the people who are gone. It’s about the people who remain.

Life insurance is the ultimate safety net. It ensures that even in the event of your death, your loved ones are taken care of. Maybe it’s ensuring that your kids can still go to the college of their choice, or making sure that your spouse still has the golden years you two dreamed of. Or it can be as simple as making sure funeral arrangements are paid for so friends and family aren’t burdened with final expenses.

It’s time to stop pretending that life insurance doesn’t exist. Let’s sit down and talk about your needs, your options, and how you want to protect your family in case of the worst. You’ll be amazed at the peace of mind it affords you. No matter what happens now, your family will be provided for. There’s no better feeling in the world.

Drinking And Driving – How Much Is Too Much?

Regardless of your attitude toward drinking and driving, the recent recommendation from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will have you taking a stand. The National Transportation Safety Board met Tuesday (5/14) to hear recommendations on ways to meet its goal of zero alcohol-related driving deaths. For details, check out this link: http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2013/05/15/291940.htm

Auto Insurance Coverages With Real Life Scenarios

Most people would rather stick pins in their eyes than read about or discuss insurance coverage. That’s why I am going to attempt to make the descriptions easy to understand and the “real life” scenarios amusing.  Not like clown funny….

Collision:

Definition— When you hit something with your car or something hits your car.  It also includes “upset”.

Scenario-– You work all day fine tuning your 1974 Pinto and you want to take her on the highway to really “open her up”. You’re at 70- 80-90 and just as you break the Century mark BAM some BOZO cuts you off (as if he can’t see a bright orange Pinto Hatchback with white and red flames across the hood and side bumpers).  You slam on the breaks and can’t stop in time to plow into his backend…that’s a collision.

2nd Scenario—use the same as above except that you swerve in time to miss the BOZO.  Only problem is that your fine-tuned Pinto starts to roll over flipping you and your prize possession 3 times.  Amazingly you hit nothing or no one else.  That’s “upset”

Comprehensive (Comp):

Definition— Includes Fire, Theft, Vandalism and most anything other than a Collision that occurs to your car.

Scenario—Your “Ex” takes your car without permission and brings it to a deserted lot.  At that point he/she uses a baseball bat on the windows. Not feeling completely satisfied with the destruction he/she decides to torch the vehicle. How about that Fire, Theft and Vandalism all in one scenario?

  • Theft—without permission
  • Vandalism—baseball bat
  • Torching—Fire

I will be adding additional coverage’s to this blog until we have covered most of the coverage available on an Auto Policy and a Homeowners Policy. Now for the disclaimer, see below.

Please be advised that this does not constitute actual policy language.  You must speak to your insurance agent and review your policy language to fully understand your coverage’s. The definitions I have used DO NOT come from any insurance carrier.  They are my own paraphrasing of the coverage.

Please contact us anytime for a review of your current coverage.
